FKM fluoroelastomer properties and typical applications.
Polymer
Fluoroelastomer (FKM, e.g. Viton™)
Temperature range
−20 °C … +200 °C
Hardness
70–90 Shore A
Overview
FKM is the go-to elastomer for high temperature combined with resistance to mineral oils, fuels and a wide range of chemicals. It offers excellent heat, ozone and ageing resistance and low gas permeability, at a higher cost than nitrile.
Strengths
- • High-temperature service to +200 °C (special grades higher)
- • Excellent resistance to mineral oils, fuels and many chemicals
- • Very good ozone, weather and ageing resistance
- • Low gas permeability
Limitations
- • Limited low-temperature flexibility (standard grades)
- • Attacked by ketones, esters, amines and hot water/steam
- • Not suitable for brake fluids (glycol based)
- • Higher material cost than NBR
