The short answer

FKM (fluoroelastomer, Viton™-type) already covers most hot and chemically demanding sealing. FFKM (perfluoroelastomer, Kalrez™-type) goes further — near-universal chemical resistance and higher temperature — but at many times the cost. Reach for FFKM only when FKM is genuinely marginal: extreme heat, aggressive chemicals that attack FKM, or applications where a failure costs far more than the seal.

The chemistry difference

FKM is a fluoroelastomer with some hydrogen in the polymer backbone. FFKM is fully fluorinated, which is why it approaches PTFE-like inertness while remaining a rubber that can be squeezed into a groove and recover. That extra fluorination is what buys the chemical and thermal performance — and what makes it expensive and harder to process.

The media that specifically defeat FKM — amines, hot ketones and esters, strong caustics, some hot acids and steam-plus-chemical exposure — are exactly where FFKM earns its keep.

When FFKM is worth it

  • Extreme temperature. Continuous service above the FKM limit, especially combined with chemical exposure.
  • Aggressive chemistry. Amines, hot solvents, strong bases and mixed-chemistry process streams that swell or attack FKM.
  • High-value or hard-to-service seals. Semiconductor process tools, chemical reactors, aerospace and analytical equipment, where downtime and contamination cost dwarf the seal price.
  • Purity requirements. FFKM’s low extractables suit ultra-clean and semiconductor use.

When FKM is the better choice

For hot oil, fuel and most industrial chemical sealing near or below 200 °C, FKM already performs and costs far less. Paying for FFKM where FKM would survive is simply spending margin you do not need to. The decision is rarely “which is better” in the abstract — FFKM almost always wins on performance — but “does this duty actually exceed what FKM can do?”

Do not forget the groove

Material choice sets the envelope; the groove still sets whether it seals. Whichever fluoroelastomer you pick, size it for the right squeeze and gland fill, and remember that even FFKM has a low-temperature limit to respect.

Is FFKM always better than FKM? On chemical and heat resistance, essentially yes. But it costs many times more and standard FKM is fine for most hot-oil, fuel and chemical service, so “better” rarely justifies the price unless the duty exceeds FKM’s limits.
