There is no universal colour code
O-rings are often black, but they can also be brown, green, blue, red, white, translucent or another colour. These colours may help a particular manufacturer or factory distinguish compounds, yet there is no universal rule that proves “green equals FKM” or “blue equals EPDM.”
Pigments, fillers, cure systems, coatings and customer identification schemes can create the same colour in different elastomer families. The same material family can also be supplied in several colours.
What colour cannot prove
Visual appearance alone cannot establish:
- polymer family or exact compound;
- Shore hardness;
- chemical compatibility;
- temperature capability;
- food, drinking-water, medical or aerospace approval;
- electrical or cleanliness properties;
- age or remaining service life.
Even branded colour conventions can vary by region, product line or special order.
Correct identification hierarchy
Start with the sealed package and traceable part number. Match the purchase order, certificate and supplier data sheet. For installed parts, use maintenance records and the equipment bill of materials. If traceability is lost, quarantine the ring rather than guessing from colour.
Laboratory methods such as infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, density, hardness and elemental analysis can narrow identification, but reverse-identifying an exact proprietary compound may still be difficult. A destructive test also does not certify that another loose ring came from the same batch.
Use colour as a controlled secondary aid
A factory may intentionally assign colours to prevent assembly mistakes. If so, document the scheme, control lighting and colour variation, and retain part-number verification as the primary control. Account for colour-blind operators and use labels, bins, barcodes or geometry so colour is not the only signal.
Beware of surface treatments
A coating or lubricant can change the visible colour and friction without changing the base elastomer. Cleaning can also remove a temporary identification mark. Specify both the base compound and any treatment on drawings and purchase documents.
Engineering rule
If material matters to safety, compatibility or lifetime, require traceable compound identification. Colour is an observation—not a material certificate.
